Set in the 1960s, The Evil Eyes centers around a grandmother facing her mortality, a mother experiencing a mid-life crisis, and a son grappling with his sexuality. This dysfunctional family's unspoken turmoil is reflected in their daily ritual of watching the supernatural soap opera, "Before Dawn". Portraying the soap’s death-cursed matriarch is Tina Sloan, renowned for her decade-long role in the long-running soap opera, "Guiding Light". As the soap’s storyline progresses, the matriarch's daughter mysteriously fades away, while her grandson gazes into a crystal ball, seeking clues about the fate him and his family.
Drawing inspiration from the original 1960s Dark Shadows soap opera, cinematographer Bradford Young creates a mesmerizing, dreamlike ambiance using black and white analog studio cameras of the era. Filming took place at St. Cecilia's Convent in Brooklyn, New York, enhancing the supernatural elements of the story.
The Evil Eyes made its premiere at the 49th annual New York Film Festival in 2011. Its poignant portrayal of LGBT themes earned the film the prestigious \aut\FILM Award for Best LGBT Film at the 50th Ann Arbor Film Festival in 2012.
