2045 (THE END?)
In November 2014, The New Sound Karaoke was invited to create a gallery installation and a new video for Karen Tongson’s Creativity in a Karaoke Culture at USC in Los Angeles. An entirely new karaoke video was produced to tell the final chapter of the marriage of Black Waterfall and Bobby Service, with a rewrite of I’ve Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing and Carly Simon’s Coming Around Again. Starring JJ Chan’s mother, Estella Chan, and opera librettist Mark Shulgasser, the piece is set twenty years in the future, in 2045, when their marriage has grown stale and boring, their celebrity has faded, and the only means of escape is death.

The event also included an artist roundtable about karaoke, followed by an open mic karaoke session. Participating artists included Bobby Abate and JJ Chan (aka New Sound Karaoke), performance artist Amy von Harrington, visual artist and writer Jibade-Khalil Huffman, and Valerie Tevere and Angel Nevarez.
